THE EFFECT OF MUSIC ON THE BRAIN

According to the Oxford Dictionary, music refers to vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

Beyond doubt, music is art, as it is used in entertaining, delivering pleasure, and for meditation for the body and soul. Every culture has its own way of responding to music. Music has grown to be part of us, with so many genres out there, it shows us how greatly music has impacted our society. While we go to work, workout, and even sleep, music is always around us and its impact can never be denied. While many claim that music helps them to concentrate and focus, music has also been scientifically proven to have an effect on the human brain.

According to Elena Mannes in the book The Power of Music, she made it known that “Scientists have found that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function.” The benefits that we get from music are many. Most of which occur when we don’t even notice what the melodies are doing to us. Let’s take a look at some of the impact that music has on the human brain.

Before we continue let us introduce you to our LED speakers.

  1. Music helps with memory

Music is capable of improving the memory mechanisms of the brain. This can help bring back an old memory, making them worth living for again. This is made possible when we listen to a particular song that is attached to that memory in the brain. It might be a song your parents use to sing for you, or probably you heard on TV when you were young. You get detailed memory once you hear that song. It can also help patients that are having a problem with their memories, they can still remember songs they loved when they were young even with their mental challenges.

  1. Music keeps us focused

Have you ever wondered how you are able to keep your mind at something once you start your playlist? For those that have trouble concentrating on something, music can help them get rid of distractions while they are able to focus on the task at hand. This benefit can be applied in a different way; some use music to focus while meditation, some use it helps them absorb more information while they study, while others enjoy music when they are working out.

And here are the boomboxes we absolutely love.

  1. Music creates hormone balance in the body

When we indulge ourselves in sad music, we recollect bad memories thereby releasing stress hormones (cortisol) into the body. The more cortisol that is released, the more anxious we get. When there is an imbalance in the hormone level, then stress sets in. While on the other hand music that we enjoy helps us release happy hormones; dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin. These same kinds of hormones are released when we are happy or doing something that we love.

We listen to music that tends to inspire and motivate us. Those melodies from our favorite playlist get us relaxed and connect us emotionally to the music. That is the power of the music to the brain.
